Soroptimist International of Rim of the World (SIROW) collaborated in October 2009 with the Willow Woods Quilt Guild to present “Breast Friends: An Artful Bra Challenge” at the Blue Jay Quilt Walk.
This first “Breast Friends” event commemorated the 25th anniversary of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The purpose of “Breast Friends” is to promote awareness, give empowerment, and educate the public about breast cancer.

Bra’rtists decorate bras with clever and fun themes. Participants creatively use thread, beads, feathers, paint, Astroturf, glass, and even wine corks and bottlecaps to create works of bra-art that are unique, entertaining, humorous, sobering, and beautiful. Past entries have included bras entitled:
- “Tee’d off with Breast Cancer” (full-length merry widow bra covered in Astroturf);
- Stunning Asian themed “Mammaries of a Geisha”;
- “Skiing the Twin Peaks” (fabric that looked like snowdrifts, accented with miniature
3-d skiers and trees); - Glitzy, red sequined “Red Hot Tatas”;
- “Abe's Babes” (covered in new pennies)
- “Breast Cancer is a Scary Thing” (Halloween theme with a huge spider); and
- Covered in feathers and sporting bright blue bird feet, “Blue-footed Boobies”.
Funds are raised by:
- Selling ballots for $1 each to vote for your favorite bra(s);
- Auction and sale of bras at a minimum of $100 each;
- and your gracious Donations.
